The Onalaska School District extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Onalaska PTO for their generous donation towards funding this year's field trips for our elementary and middle schools. Mr. Markuson and Mrs. Soderback's acceptance of this donation represents the appreciation of the entire school community for the PTO's support. Thanks to their generosity, students will have invaluable opportunities to learn and explore beyond the classroom.

A note regarding student safety As some of you may have noticed this morning, the district is working to increase supervision and control traffic flow during morning drop off. As cars and buses try to navigate the tight space near our preschool and TK building, there have been situations that have created unsafe conditions for students. This has become even more of an issue recently as we have witnessed some very near misses. We recognize that the current drop off setup is problematic and are currently working to make it better for the coming school year. Here are some things the district is doing: Positioning staff in key areas to better move the am flow of traffic Examining drop off areas and times for a smoother am drop off in the coming school year Adding safety a security officer for next school year to help lead this and further safety initiatives in our district As parents and community members we ask that you drive safely while in the school zone, follow traffic as directed, and be considerate of pedestrians, buses and other vehicles. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe, and thank you in advance for your patience as we put some of these changes in place.

Aquaculture students released 75,000 Coho Salmon and 35,000 Steelhead smolts March 28th. The students have carefully taken care of these fish for the past year and the quality of the fish was impressive. The salmon and steelhead smolts will begin their journey down Gheer Creek, eventually making it to the Pacific Ocean where they will spend a few years and then return to exactly where they were released in Gheer Creek. ~ Kevin Hoffman

The Onalaska High School Science Club hosted a meeting on Thursday, March 28th. They made "Carbon & Sugar Snakes", an experiment where powdered sugar and baking soda are combusted with ethanol. This combustion creates carbon and water vapor, which forms a fiery, snake-like reaction! Nice job Loggers! ~Melissa Reiman

On Friday, March 15th 2024 our High School Counseling Department hosted the 1st Annual Career On Wheels event. Our students went through four twenty minute sessions with professionals whose careers are on wheels - not your typical in a building at a desk job. Students were able to get first hand information from the professionals themselves. At some stations they were able to get hands-on experience with guidance from the professionals. This event fostered exposure to post-secondary pathways and making direct connections with various professionals within our community. We would like to extend our gratitude to all those who helped our students gain insight into post-secondary pathways that are not always talked about. Tacoma Power, Lewis County Sheriff, Lewis County Fire & Ambulance, Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery & Biologist, Les Schwab, Army National Guard, KELA/KMNT, Washington State Patrol, Gordon Timber Falling, Centralia Police Department, DNR Wildland Firefighting, DNR Aviation, The Chronicle, PUD Telecommunications, Reed Construction, ODS Bus, and Hampton - Forester Heather Jacoby
